About the Brattle Theatre
The Brattle Theatre is a repertory cinema that ran its first film in 1953 and is noted for its small group of enthusiastic staff. Located in the heart of Harvard Square, this theatre’s reputation of engaging, off-beat programming mixed with cinematic classics has earned it the moniker of “Boston’s unofficial film school.”
In 1953, Bryant Haliday and Cyrus Harvey Jr. kicked the theatre into gear with a screening of the German film, Der Hauptmann von Köpenick (The Captain from Köpenick). The two men later founded Janus Films with the intentions of distributing foreign films nationwide.
The Brattle Theatre Today
Film takes centerstage at the Brattle. While the theatre shows first-run independent films and special screenings of classic movies, its specialty is a repertory programming format that consists of films from a specific director, subject, or genre. These films are often shown either throughout the course of a week, or on the same weekday throughout the month.
Repertory programming at the Brattle has included series on the films of Paul Thomas Anderson, classics of Film Noir, and silent horror movies.
The Brattle also offers a wide selection of concessions to its guests. Theatre-goers can enjoy freshly made popcorn, local baked goods, and candy during a screening. They even have an array of soda, beer, and wine for patrons to enjoy.
While the Brattle is known best for its regular film programming, the theatre plays host to a number of special events in Harvard Square.
Its ample seating space and stage make it an ideal venue for speaking events, and The Brattle is a frequent venue for well-known speakers connected with Harvard University.
And the theatre hosts a number of annual events that bring the area’s film fans together. Annual offerings like the Bugs Bunny Film Festival, New Year’s Day Marx Brothers Marathon, and their Valentine’s Day screening of Casablanca are consistent crowd pleasers.
