Sanders Theatre is located within Memorial Hall on Harvard’s campus, and the two share a rich history.

Following the Civil War, a group of Harvard alumni petitioned the college to allow them to raise funds for a memorial to the Harvard graduates who fought for the Union army.

Once given an official sanction by the Harvard Corporation, the group decided that its memorial would take the form of a building, and the idea for Memorial Hall was born.

Meanwhile, Charles Sanders, a member of Harvard’s Class of 1802 and former “college steward,” donated $40,000 to the University for the purpose of building a hall or theatre. Sanders envisioned a venue that could host Commencement ceremonies, alumni meetings and other festive events.

The Sanders Theatre project joined forces with the Memorial Hall project to make the completion of both more practical.

In 1875, construction of Sanders Theatre was completed. Its first official event was the commencement ceremony for the Harvard University Class of 1876.

Sanders Theatre Today

Sanders Theatre continues to provide a home for the arts and more at Harvard University.

The theatre serves as a primary venue for several of Harvard’s undergraduate choir and orchestra groups. It also hosts performances by other ensembles, including the Boston Philharmonic Orchestra and the Boston Chamber Music Society.

And while this venue is great for classical music, it also provides space for the famous Charles Eliot Norton Lectures and a number of the University’s undergraduate core curriculum courses.
