The title of Duke of Cambridge started in 1664 with James Stuart, son of the Duke of York. While the name does come from the city of Cambridge in the United Kingdom, the title holder does not govern the land.
Prince William, the current Duke of Cambridge, was born into the British royal House of Windsor on 21 June 1982, to Charles, Prince of Wales, and Diana, Princess of Wales. The elder brother to Prince Harry (born 1984), William Arthur Philip Louis received the titles of Duke of Cambridge, Earl of Strathearn, and Baron of Carrickfergus before his wedding on 29 April 2011, from his grandmother and current Queen Elizabeth II.
William stands second in line to several thrones in the British Commonwealth, which governs realms including Canada, the United Kingdom, and New Zealand. Before taking on his title, he obtained a master’s degree in arts for geography at the University of St. Andrews, where he met his now wife and the Duchess of Cambridge, Catherine ‘Kate’ Middleton.

Though the family and public expected Prince William would one day ascend the throne, the Duke still pursues an active military career that places him in harm’s way. He holds the ranks of Lieutenant in the Royal Navy, Captain in the Blues and Royals, and Flight Lieutenant in the Royal Air Force. Later revealed to the public, William participated in 2008 during a body recovery of Trooper Robert Pearson in Afghanistan. His fellow soldiers refer to him as ‘Billy the Fish,’ a play on his title as William in association with Wales, United Kingdom.
Prince William helped establish and now maintains with his wife and brother, the charity The Foundation of Prince William and Prince Harry. The goal of the foundation is to collect donations and then deliver those funds to charities that support causes including young people and sustainable development. William has taken on charity work since his mother, Diana, instilled the importance of helping others in him at an early age.
